Shower plumbing help!

Postby cisco_trooper on Wed Mar 26, 2008 4:40 pm

I have a shower that is apparently possessed.

Here is what happens. I can turn the hot water on, about 1/4 or 1/2 turn of the knob, and the water then suddenly stops. I can turn it some more and start to get a steady flow, but at low pressure. At some point, say about 1 full turn of the knob, turning the knob even 1 more degree yields out of control water pressure - the kind that would throw you through the wall if you were standing in front of it. You then have to turn the knob almost all the way off to bring the pressure back down. Anyone know what could be wrong here. Taking a shower in the morning is becoming quite a chore just to get the water temp right with the hot water pressure severely out of whack.

Thanks guys.

Do you have a single handle pressure balance shower valve or is it the two handle type :?:

There is a cold water handle, hot water handle, and a tub diverter.

You are going to have to pull your tub diverter out and see where the malfunction is.

You will not believe what I found behind this wall.

It all started with the fluctuating hot water pressure at the shower. Upon taking the handles off to try and get a better look I find it is wet behind the wall. Realizing I have issues I go around the other side of the wall and cut out a square about 3' x 3.' To my surprise there is a plastic bag wrapped around the copper pipe that supplies the tub spout. "That's odd," I thought, and I removed it to see what was hiding. Now brace yourself, this is where it gets good. Someone had actually started cutting that pipe, and apparently changed their mind half way through. They thought plastic wrap fitted with about 10 zip ties and a hose clamp would fix the quarter inch gash they left in the pipe. Retards. Absolute retards. Don't people understand what water does to your house.

So, half the sheetrock behind the shower wall was toast and had to be removed. I thought, "Hell, I never liked this bathroom anyway, I'm getting rid of it." And I did. I spent the whole weekend ripping out all that nasty neglected tile, and tub, and putting a new tub and shower in, freshly fitted with nice brand new plumbing. Now it works. It works well. It isn't ugly. And the water is GONE.

Cheers.

People realy do some crazy tihngs with plumbing that can cause alot of damage and that is why there is license laws, codes, permits and inspections. 8)

The system will never be perfect however; the above rules people take for granted have saved alot of people the trouble you went through. :)
