Stinky hot water
My wife and I live in the country on a rural water system which uses well water. When we moved here 15 years ago, a 6-year water heater would only last 18 months. After the water system started mixing water from two other wells with our local well, we have managed to get 5 years from a 6-year tank. I splurged on the last tank and bought a 12-year water heater. Now our hot water smells like raw sewage. The minerals in our water must be reacting with the anode rod to make a bad smell. The only way I've found to help the situation is to drain the tank outside every two weeks. I would remove the anode rod if I could find it. I think they buried it under 4" of styrofoam insulation. Does anybody have a suggestion?

Re: Stinky hot water
Yes, you need to flush and clornie the tank to help with the smell and you should have a licensed plumber help you out so it gets done right.
You should also get your water tested and install a water treatment system for better water conditions so it does not cost you an arm and leg over the long run.

I think chlorine is the best solution. In our town chlorine is used in every month. It will make water usable.
