Vent-Away American Standard Toilet, upgrade = now broken

    Hi, all.

I've just finished installing new "guts" in my old American Standard 4052 toilet with Vent-Away. I got the new works as an all-in-one repair kit from Lowe's. I've installed the new fill valve and flush valve, but there was a 3rd hole where the vent-away system went. I sealed it and the hole in the bottom of the toilet this lined up with. The toilet barely flushed. It tries to spin, but doesn't get any suction. I tried opening the hole in the base where the vent-away system connected, but the same results. Any ideas? Also, I believe my answer may be had at the previous post titled "Toilet Bowl won't clear on spin". I can't read the whole post (too old, I think.) It's post number 2849, if a moderator could get that post for me, I'd appreciate it.

    Follow up---

Did plugging the hole for the vent-away system (and discarding the vent-away system altogether) cause my slow draining?

You may have plug the backflow which fills the vent-away. Also you have a old model vent-away. You must also make sure you don't get the none vent-away backflow. One last note, all backflows are copies now, and they are not correct. They don't work the same as the old ones, I have work on 10 vent-away in the last year.

Re: Vent-Away American Standard Toilet, upgrade = now broken

We have 3 American Standard model 4052 vent-away toilets. Two were converted to regular toilets by a plumber about ten years ago. The only difference with the converted ones is that there is a plug in the extra hole in the botton of the tank. Our last functioning vent-away toilet is in need of conversion now; the replacement parts are much too expensive to repair it. I have been trying to find someone who knows how to convert it, but haven't had any luck. All of our toilets are in excellent physical condition so really don't want to replace them until we have to.

I found one web site were someone had just filled the hole with a foam plug and it seemed to work okay. Does anyone know what else can be used to plug the hole?

We have never had any trouble with low water volume for flushing on the converted ones, so can't offer any advice for that.

I think you should have filled only the hole in the bottom of the tank. You may have eliminated the water flow through the holes in the rim of the toilet.

I saw similar problems on another very creditable site and it was highly recommend to install a new toilet that is properly vented and I second that.
